# Aldous Huxley - What a piece of work is a man
- how minds work without language
- reality - blooming buzzing confusion
- language is so we can make order of it
- nervous system itself does job of **selction and abstraction** long before language comes to play
- lower species - extraordinary selection and abstraction going on
- every animal is not aware of the universe as we know it – sky, sea, wind, trees..
- only is aware of what of those particular objects are useful for itself
- living in "limited world"
- #### its nervous system is so constructed that it just selects out of the infinite number of data in the world
- biologacial valiable aspects – unvelts of animals are really strange
- frog – eyes optical efficient – perceives only that which moves, when it stopes, it does not see it
- difference from our nervous system – ours give great deal more of data
- if we did nothing about it, it would certainly seem as confustion
- inability if sick person's nervous system to shut out those aspects of the universe that are unnecessary
- stimuli of every kind
- language comes in – we impose an order, by means of language
- we abstract and categorize
- we ENJOY the manipulation of SYMBOLS
- we like fitting symbols together to patterns and systems
- sometimes gives reality and sometimes the illusion of what the worlds is all about
